Chapter Ten

It was, Luke decided, a rare and distinct pleasure, following Holly O'Mara as she walked. Those white jeans were as fantasy-inducing as the thought of her wrapped in a southseas sarong. She bent slightly to put the opened wine into the refrigerator with the other bottle, showing off curves that he wanted to slide his hands over.

"You like brown basmati?" she asked as she reached up to a high cupboard, stretching, revealing a good four inches of midriff that begged his fingers to encircle, and shuffled through a small grove of clear plastic bags on the top shelf.

"Sure," he said, not even caring that he didn't have a clue what she meant, and then noticed an angry red mark on her waist. It looked like—dammit, it was—a rope burn. He felt sick. He'd done it that to her. That was why she'd yelped,

"Watch it, you idiot!" The rope had slipped free of his hand, raked along her tender skin and left a burn. He'd felt it on his own hand later, when he'd recovered from the impact of that kiss, and never once considered what the rope might have done to her.

"Holly!" he said, stepping forward, lifting the blouse that had slid back down as she came off her tiptoes and dropped her arms. "Cripes! Let me see that!" She jerked away, nearly knocking over the measuring cup she'd been about to pour rice into. "See what?" 161

"I hurt you," he said, holding her still and examining the sore just above the waistband of her jeans. "With that rope. When you kissed me."

"It's nothing," she claimed, slipping out of his grasp. "I put some ointment on it. It'll be gone in a couple of days. The rope ran through your hand, too. Didn't it burn you?"

"Not that badly." He showed her his own hand which, having much tougher skin, bore only faint evidence of trauma. "I'm sorry, Holly. I hate knowing I hurt you."

"You, if I might remind you," she said with an insouciant grin, "were not the cause of that minor mishap. That was me and my exuberance. I guess I'm as much a woman of impulse as you are a man of action."

Luke thought of all the women he knew who might be railling at him for having "scarred" them permanently. But not Holly. When she thought she was responsible for something, she didn't try to put the blame off on someone else. Just one more thing to like about her, as if he'd needed more. Suddenly, he wanted badly be what he'd claimed—"a man of action" instead of the methodical, figure-it-out-first-then-dosomething-about-it-later kind of guy he was. He contented himself with saying, "You can practice your impulses on me any time."

The smile she angled at him over he shoulder came damn close to initiating something that might delay dinner a long, long time, but he manfully restrained himself. It was too soon for that and despite the hot, erotic kisses they'd shared, he
